In the summer transfer window, Barcelona coach Xavi has urged the team to bring in two midfielders, both to replace departed captain Sergio Busquets and to provide better depth options.
In preparation for a new challenge outside of Europe, Busquets will join Inter Miami alongside former Camp Nou teammates Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez. But he leaves the team with over 720 first-team appearances and 15 years of experience.
After winning the La Liga this past season and a renewed Champions League title in 2023/24 following two consecutive group stage exits, Xavi is seeking to further improve his midfield with Gavi and Pedri both continuing to distinguish themselves as the future generation of global superstars.
"In midfield, I lack [the] inside game." For me, Sergio Busquets' leaving is a major issue. Although Frenkie has moved up, the manager noted, "I need creative players in midfield."
On the necessity for depth, he further stated, "You have to go for a high-level substitute."

Barcelona want to sign Ilkay Gundogan this summer on a free transfer. This month, his Manchester City contract is set to expire, and no new deal has been reached. Another player under consideration is Bernardo Silva of the City team, but he may cost £75 million.
