According to 90min, Manchester United are worried that if Harry Maguire won't accept a transfer out of Old Trafford, their intentions to buy a new elite defender will be derailed.
After joining from Leicester in 2019, Maguire, who is still the most expensive defender of all time, fell down the pecking order in Erik ten Hag's first season, with Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane being the favoured center-back pairing.
The English international's agents think a move to Serie A, where Juventus and Inter have expressed interest, would be his best choice, as 90min earlier reported Tottenham have shortlisted the player.
Other Premier League teams like Newcastle and West Ham are keeping an eye on the issue, but 90min believes that Maguire is eager to compete for a spot in the starting XI on a more consistent basis.
United is looking to bolster their defense and has spoken with Kim Min-jae of Napoli, who has a clause in his contract that permits him to depart for less than £50m at the beginning of July.
If Maguire won't budge, United might switch up their defensive acquisition plan.
Despite Maguire's attitude or the status of Victor Lindelof, some club officials still intend to select another center-back. When Martinez and Varane were out by injuries during the conclusion of the season, the Swede is said to have impressed Ten Hag.
Maguire's England credentials have not yet been hurt by his decreased playing time under Ten Hag, and he has a contract with Manchester United through 2025 with an additional year's option.
Gareth Southgate, the manager of the Three Lions, said in May that it would be challenging to maintain selecting the 30-year-old if he continues to sit on the bench at Old Trafford. In 2022–2023, Maguire made eight Premier League starts and was a fixture in United's cup XI both at home and in the Europa League.
