Police have appealed to the public, particularly residents of Bortianor in the Greater Accra Region, to “promptly report any individuals with gunshot wounds who may be seeking medical treatment”.
The appeal comes after a shootout on Thursday, June 8 between the law-enforcement officers and persons suspected to be landguards terrorising residents and landowners in Bortianor and its environs.
According to the police, the suspects opened fire from their hideout after spotting the officers of the anti-robbery and anti-landguard unit.
The unit had led an operation targeting criminal elements involved in robbery and landguard activities.
In a press release on Saturday, June 10, the police said five of the suspects were injured as a result of the shootout and later pronounced dead at the hospital.
The remaining suspects, however, fled the scene and are still on the run.
It is these suspects that the police are calling on residents to help apprehend.
“Your cooperation will assist the police in taking immediate action,” the police press release said.
After Thursday’s operation exhibits retrieved from the crime scene included: one AK47 Assault rifle, 10 rounds of AK47 ammunition, one pump action gun with nine rounds of BB cartridges, two pistols with 10 rounds of 9mm ammunition, one unregistered Toyota Tacoma pickup, four motorbikes, three (of which are unregistered, a knife and a pepper spray.
