Manchester City won the Champions League for the first time, beating Inter Milan and winning the treble thanks to Rodri's goal.

It is the only trophy the Premier League side has slipped out of hand since it was taken over by Sheikh Mansour in 2008, with only one final before that.

Mansour must have known something special was going to happen in Istanbul on Saturday as he only attended his second game against City.

Pep Guardiola learned from his mistakes in the final two years ago and started off with a very strong team that, despite Kyle Walker's absence, started just three times throughout the campaign.

Despite being the highly-rated team early in the game, City certainly didn't make things their way in the first half as Inter thrashed them brilliantly from the front. Guardiola's side received the first blow when Kevin De Bruyne was injured after just 36 minutes.

Neither team was able to break the deadlock before half-time and, while tactically appealing, it was a far cry from the classic 45-minute opener.

Just before the game was over, City's coach had to get on his knees begging his team to continue playing after a huge mistake by Manuel Akanji.

The defender left a back pass for Ederson and couldn't see Lautaro Martinez behind him, which allowed the Argentinian to rush into the box undefended.

He could have passed into the box for Romelu Lukaku but chose to continue as the defenders covered, fortunately for English champions Ederson quickly left the line to save. They were forced to pay less than 10 minutes after Rodri was ridiculed by history after being benched in the final two years ago.

The midfielder took advantage of Bernardo Silva's blocked pass to send the ball around two defenders and into the bottom corner of the goal.

Man City were somewhat fortunate when the score was only maintained in the second minute after Federico Dimarco's goal sent the ball into the crossbar with his head.

The ball came for the Inter fans to try a second time but it could only go against Lukaku's feet with his header on target.

Millions of Manchester United fans had hoped their former striker Lukaku would finally make a difference and somehow he did, but in a bad way. Advertisement

The Belgian had a perfect chance to equalize late in the game but Ederson somehow saved the shot with his knee.
