In the waning moments of Manchester City's glorious treble victory, Kevin De Bruyne admitted he was injured.
De Bruyne ultimately gave in to a persistent hamstring issue, so he was unable to play as City finished an incredible season by winning the Champions League on Saturday.
After 35 minutes of a tense championship match against Inter Milan in Istanbul, the inspiring Belgian playmaker was substituted; City went on to win 1-0 thanks to a goal from Rodri in the 68th minute.
"I give everything for my team, and the people in the club know that," De Bruyne added. I'm happy that I was able to do what I achieved.It's unfortunate that my situation turned out the way it did.
I felt fine this week, but for the past two months, I've been told it was risky, but you take it.I carried out my obligation. I had some personal things happen with my family on top of that, and I managed to do that, but, here, the hamstring simply snapped. "I had some missed games, obviously, but the games like Arsenal, Bayern (Munich), and (Real) Madrid I managed to do it.
After suffering a serious facial injury in the team's defeat to Chelsea two years prior, De Bruyne was pulled off the field for the second time in a Champions League final.
He did not want to linger on his personal misery though after City came through.
I played for 35 minutes and felt fine, so I can't hold myself to higher standards.
After experiencing significant domestic success during his eight years at City, De Bruyne's victory realized a lifelong dream.
I've essentially been fighting with my team to earn this medal my entire career, he remarked.Although winning is certainly important, I still don't think it defines my career. I am happy and proud of who I am as a person and a football player.
Much has been said about what City's victory might represent, both for the position of the current team and the club overall.
