Per Mertesacker, the manager of the Arsenal academy, thinks the club has a good chance of luring Ilkay Gundogan away from Manchester City this summer.
At the end of June, Gundogan's contract will expire, and he may leave the Etihad Stadium for free.
The midfielder has been courted by Barcelona throughout the 2022–2023 season, and 90min knows they are confident in their ability to secure his services.
However, Gundogan's first suitor was Arsenal, whose manager Mikel Arteta was eager for a reunion with the German after the two had previously collaborated at Man City.
In recent weeks, PSG has also been linked to a bid for Gundogan.
When Man City and Inter faced off in the Champions League final on Saturday, Mertesacker, who once shared the field with Gundogan for the German national team, served as a ZDF analyst. Rodri's strike in the second half gave the Citizens a 1-0 victory, and captain Gundogan was the first to hoist the illustrious trophy after the game.
Mertesacker stated during the broadcast on German television that he thought Arsenal might be Gundogan's next destination.
"I believe the clubs are lining up. We're in a good situation since Arteta is familiar with him and we probably haven't lost touch, Mertesacker added.
"I believe he will take some time to process everything before selecting one of the four clubs."
Mertesacker continued by saying that Gundogan would be able to declare "mission accomplished" if Man City won the treble.
In response to a question concerning his future in Istanbul following the game, Gundogan only said: "I have not made a final decision on my future yet."
The final game of Manchester City's most prosperous season has been played.
The Premier League was won by them. The FA Cup was theirs. They finally prevailed in the Champions League.
For the Citizens, who for significant portions of the season appeared as though they would not add any more trophies to their collection, everything eventually fell into place.
