A Manchester United midfielder has been told he will likely play his last game for the club, with manager Erik ten Hag planning to bring in a potentially controversial replacement between the clubs.
Man Utd look set to be involved in some big transfers this summer. They are competing with Real Madrid for Tottenham striker Harry Kane, who will soon enter the final year of his contract.
Ten Hag also wants to improve his defensive options, with Napoli centre-back Kim Min-jae being his main target. Kim is the target of rivals Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane, with Harry Maguire no longer on Ten Hag's mind. A new goalkeeper could also arrive at Old Trafford this summer, as Sunday Gossip explained how Man Utd are eyeing Jordan Pickford to replace David de Gea. And the England goalkeeper could cost as little as £30m as Everton need to improve their financial situation.
Despite all these links and discussions, Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount could become the first newcomer to Man Utd.
Mount has agreed personal terms with Man Utd as he prepares to enter the final year of his contract at Chelsea. The Red Devils must now reach an agreement with Chelsea. It could take some work as the two clubs differ in valuing their players, with Chelsea demanding up to £80m.
Mount could be a controversial signing between both fan groups. He obviously has a good pedigree, but he just had his toughest season in a Chelsea shirt. This, coupled with his high salary demands, may worry some Man Utd fans.
Meanwhile, Chelsea fans will obviously be furious when one of their hometown players joins one of their biggest rivals. 'Time's up' for Man Utd players
Former Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton discussed what would happen if Mount joined Ten Hag's squad. Hutton thinks his signing will likely result in Fred being offloaded.
"I think maybe the time has come," Hutton told Football Insider when asked about the Brazilian's future.
"I like him as a player, he works very hard, he gives 110%. I think the midfield has been relatively stable since Casemiro's arrival. “I think if Mount was involved, he would share that burden.
"It's tough for Fred, he's not going to score you many goals, so you're wondering if there's any way to upgrade. If so, you have to send people off.
"I wonder if Ten Hag thinks that way now, that he wants fresh blood. But to do that, you need to downsize."
Fred's contract at Man Utd will end next summer and it is unlikely that he will be offered a new extension. Thus, it is understandable that Man Utd will spend money for him and agree to play this year.
Man Utd initially splashed £52m on Fred, but he's unlikely to get it all back. Fred is 30 and that will work against him, as he also had problems at Man Utd in previous seasons and will be remembered by potential suitors.
