Houssem Aouar, a former target of Arsenal and Tottenham, joins Roma as Jose Mourinho improves his team.
Roma have confirmed that midfielder Houssem Aouar, who was a target for several Premier League teams, will sign with the Serie A club on July 1.
The 24-year-old was reportedly interested in Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest last summer, but he finally chose to stay at Lyon, where he had previously played as a young player before joining the senior team in 2017.
It comes after rumors that the midfielder was wanted by both Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal in the summer of 2021; however, Martin Odegaard was signed by the Gunners, and the Spurs move never happened.
Aouar, who earlier this year switched his national allegiance from France to Algeria, will join the Serie A team at the start of next month and sign a five-year contract with the Giallorossi, Roma has now revealed.
'I'm very glad to have signed for Roma, because they're a wonderful club with a great history,' Aouar, who will don the No. 22 shirt for his new team, said on the Roma website.
"I believe it to be the ideal project for me, with a sizable team, top-notch players, and a distinctive fanbase." I'm a Giallorossi player now, and I'm prepared.
The midfielder has played in the Champions League and Europa League and has 179 Ligue 1 games with Lyon, scoring 30 goals.
He is the first of two players Jose Mourinho is said to have been promised in an effort to maintain him as manager of Roma despite widespread rumors that he will resign at the end of current season.
