Silvio Berlusconi, the former Italian Prime Minister and president of AC Milan, has passed away at the age of 86 after a challenging battle with leukemia.
Berlusconi was rushed to Milan's San Raffaele Hospital on June 9 due to heart problems and difficulty breathing. This hospitalization marked his second visit to the facility, as he had previously been discharged on May 19 after spending 45 days there.
Berlusconi's health issues began with a pneumonia diagnosis, which eventually led to the discovery of blood cancer. Despite undergoing intensive therapy to combat the disease, his condition deteriorated, and unfortunately, he succumbed to the illness.
A prominent figure in Italian politics and the media industry, Berlusconi served as the country's Prime Minister on three separate occasions: from 1994 to 1995, 2001 to 2006, and 2008 to 2011. However, he was also known for his controversial personal life, earning the nickname "playboy PM." Berlusconi was infamous for his involvement in sex scandals and often made eyebrow-raising jokes.
In addition to his political career, Berlusconi was a successful entrepreneur and owned AC Milan, one of Italy's most renowned football clubs, from 1986 to 2017. During his ownership, AC Milan achieved great success, winning seven Serie A titles and five UEFA Champions League championships. In 2018, Berlusconi purchased Monza, another football club, which under his leadership, achieved promotion to Serie A in 2022.
Despite his advanced age, Berlusconi maintained a lively spirit and occasionally displayed controversial behavior. Last year, he made headlines after promising his Monza players a "bus full of prostitutes" if they managed to defeat AC Milan or Juventus, showcasing his penchant for provocative statements and his colorful personality.
Silvio Berlusconi's passing marks the end of an era in Italian politics and the football world. He leaves behind a complex legacy that includes both remarkable achievements and a fair share of controversies. His contributions to Italian society, whether in politics or sports, will be remembered as people reflect on his eventful life and the impact he had on his country.
