A Ghanaian lady, identified on the microblogging platform Twitter by her handle @akua_coco took the platform to vent out her anger on how she along with her friends got detained by the Oyibi police in Accra for carrying a condom in their bags. Going forward, she revealed that, she along with three other people which includes her male friend who was driving and two female friends seated at the back, they were returning from Keta back to Accra when they were stopped by the police at the Oyibi police barrier. She added that they packed all their things together since they were all traveling including that of her male friend who had the condoms.
She added that, after they stopped them, the police ordered him to park his car since it’s an offense to have many women in your car, she added that they were all smiling and being nice until they began a search resulting in them finding a single condom. Read her narration of what ensued.
“Is it illegal to carry condoms at night as a woman in
Ghana? Cause we've been at this police barrier for
over 20 minutes for this particular reason Had a really hectic night, traveling from keta to Accra an just at the oyibi barrier we were stopped, my male friend was driving and there were 3 ladies including myself, we just packed all our stuff together including my male friends (condom was his) When we were stopped they told my friend it's in offense to have so many women in his car so he should park, we were all smiling and being nice, then they asked my lady friend to search her tote bag and they found toiletries including a single condom, Officer one then asked my friend "Aden wo y3 ashawo and I got offended and said he has no right to call her that, she was even in sweat pants and a baggy tshirt, while going back and forth with him he told us it's illegal and in the constitution I challenged him and he started getting riled up, we were exhausted and they kept us there, imagine a police officer having his hand on a gun while getting angry cause you questioned his utterances as a professional, he told me to get down for a search Second officer searched my hand bag, and found my nurses and midwifery staff ID card and that's when officer 2 calmed down and asked where I work and I told him, this whole time officer1 has called my lady friend to the side mentally abusing her for a condom”.
Officer Two then asks me for my name, and I mention
then he asked Me for my number so that he calls me
later, I took his, then he asked me to call, wanting to
go home I just did, and not before long both friends get
into the car, My lady friend was in bare tears, shaking and scared, and my male friend was irritated and stressed because officer one took a bribe of 40gh, so because of 4 10gh cedi notes we were harassed by policemen for a lady having a condom in her toiletry bag Oh and before I forget, these two policemen said that women are not supposed to carry condoms men are, so if a woman Carries a condom, she is automatically a prostitute, this is how Gh police contribute to safe sex education in Ghana, I woke up to a text from officer no 2 asking if I am home, this is the country we live in, we were shamed, defamed, harassed by the people supposed to keep us safe, because of a condom for a 40gh bribe, disgusting So please @GhPoliceService educate us on this law so we don't break the law”.
