Pep Guardiola explains Sir Alex Ferguson's text message following his treble achievement

Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United won the treble in 1999 and were the only English team to do it until Saturday, when Pep Guardiola's Manchester City did the same.

Pep Guardiola said that Sir Alex Ferguson sent him a good luck message just hours before his Manchester City team won the treble.

Rodri's second-half goal brought the Champions League trophy to the Etihad for the first time, as the Premier League champions and FA Cup winners made Ataturk Stadium history. In a fight of attrition with the Italians, City had to ride their luck to victory.

Federico Dimarco hit the crossbar shortly after Rodri had thrown City's 30,000 travelling fans into raptures, and his follow-up hit teammate Romelu Lukaku. And Ederson made a stunning stop to deny Lukaku's 89th-minute header.

"I was so happy to get a message from Sir Alex Ferguson on my phone this morning," Guardiola said of City's match with Ferguson's Manchester United in 1999. It moved me. I am overjoyed to be sitting next to Sir Alex. Winning the Triple Crown is extremely difficult, but it was written in the stars that we would do it this year.

"Winning this trophy is really difficult. This tournament is a coin toss. However, it is now ours. We knew it would be difficult, and we were nervous in the first half. It was a matter of patience, and we had to be lucky with Ederson in the end.

"We gained momentum by winning the Premier League and FA Cup, and now we have this." I am sleepy, calm, and content. I do not have the energy to worry about next season, when we will start from scratch. We will celebrate in the hotel with family and friends, and the parade will be in Manchester on Monday."

Match-winner Despite admitting he played "s**t," Rodri was chosen man of the match. "My first half performance was not good enough - I was playing s**t," the Spanish midfielder told BT Sport. I am sensitive. It is a fantasy come true. All of these fans have been waiting for I do not know how long. They and we both deserve it.

"It was extremely difficult, but finals are like this." You may not expect to play well all of the time. There are emotions and nerves present. We competed as if we were animals, and we want more. This one is for all of the players who helped the club grow, such as [Sergio] Aguero, [David] Silva, and [Vincent] Kompany."

"I was awful today," Jack Grealish said, echoing Rodri. I do not mind. Winning the treble with this collection of players is truly remarkable. Anyone who knows me knows how much I value my family and how much I like football, and this is my entire existence."
