Joe Royle, a former manager of Manchester City, claims that Pep Guardiola's current squad is "one of, if not the best" that English football has ever seen.

With their triumph over Inter Milan in the Champions League final on Saturday night, City won the treble, and Royle is certain that Guardiola's class of 2023 will rank among the all-time greats.

There is no question about that, according to Royle, 74, who guided City to back-to-back promotions from the third division to the Premier League in 1999 and 2000. They are among the best English club teams ever, if not the best. They must be considered as one of them. They are quick to counter and can play impromptu or in other systems.

They have world-class players, a strong sense of teamwork, and a very, very strong roster that can fill every position.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United became the first English team to win the treble (league title, FA Cup, and Champions League) in 1999, the same year that City fell for the first time ever into the third division.

The argument about whether accomplishment is greater will now rage among the supporters of both clubs, and Royle declared: "A treble is a treble."When compared to their opponents in their age, they are both equally matched, and supporters of both City and United will legitimately assert that their team's treble was the finest.

City finished their one season under Royle in the previous Second Division.

Gillingham had a 2-0 lead in the penultimate minute of regulation time until City's Kevin Horlock and Paul Dickov scored late goals to force extra time and then penalties, which Royle's team won 3-1.

"It was an unforgettable way to win promotion," Royle remarked. And it's no secret when you think about how far City has come since then. With their financial assistance, the current ownership has transformed City from a team that did drop to the third division.

"We got back into the Premier League, but we definitely didn't have the funding that the team has today to stay there, and we went straight back down again," the author said. But since then, it has largely improved.
