Following Lewis Dunk's withdrawal due to injury, Chelsea center-back Levi Colwill has been summoned into training with the England senior setup.
Dunk, who shined alongside Colwill for Brighton this season, was forced to withdraw from the squad on Sunday after admitting he still hadn't fully healed from his injury that forced him to miss Brighton's final two games of the season.
There hasn't been an official replacement called up, but manager Gareth Southgate looked to the Under-21 team, where Colwill was practicing with Lee Carsley's team, and extended an invitation to the 20-year-old to the first team.
Uncertainty surrounds Colwill's potential opportunity to play for Southgate's starting lineup. The Three Lions already have four center-backs in their squad: John Stones, Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi, and Tyrone Mings. The teams play Malta on Friday and North Macedonia on Monday.
Colwill is expected to return to the Under-21 setup as they get ready for the Under-21 European Championships this summer after his time with the first team.
Colwill's call-up is a just reward for his outstanding performance while on loan with Brighton, which has made this summer unpredictable as he returns to a Chelsea team that already has an abundance of center-backs on its roster.
Following a summer in which significant sums of money were spent on Kalidou Koulibaly, Wesley Fofana, and Marc Cucurella, Benoit Badiashile joined in January. Under Mauricio Pochettino, Thiago Silva and Trevoh Chalobah are also vying for playing time.
Colwill's uncertain future has prompted Brighton to put together a club-record offer to sign him, but 90min believes Chelsea are sure they won't be selling the academy graduate this summer.
Chelsea wants to give Colwill the chance to win over Pochettino, and they're prepared to turn down any interest in the 20-year-old.
