Liverpool are said to have abandoned their pursuit of Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes, with Jurgen Klopp now focusing on alternatives.
The Portugal international has enjoyed an impressive debut season in the Premier League, despite his side facing serious relegation at one stage.
However, his performance for Wolves caught the eye of Klopp, who has long had his eye on Nunes.
It's no secret that the coach is keen to strengthen his Liverpool midfield ahead of next season as he looks to get his side back into the top four.
Naby Keita, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will all leave the club this summer. Furthermore, Fabinho, Thiago and Jordan Henderson are said to be past their prime.
Klopp brought in Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton for a bargain £35m. But, he is still expected to bring in at least one more centre-back before next season.
Liverpool are said to be in talks with a number of midfielders. But, despite the strong link with the departure, it seems unlikely that Nunes will be leaving Wolves this summer. Liverpool cut interest from Nunes
As reported by the Liverpool Echo, Liverpool have now 'abandoned' Nunes and are pursuing other players.
As mentioned, the 24-year-old has performed well for Wolves this season, despite the team's lackluster form.
Nunes signed for Midlands club Sporting Lisbon for £38m last summer. Since then, he has made 34 Premier League appearances, scoring once and assisting once.
His only goal of the tournament came against Chelsea - a sensational volley from a corner to give Wolves a crucial 1-0 win. So Molineux loyalists are hoping more of the same will happen next season.
As for Liverpool, they have their eyes on a number of potential alternatives to Nunes.
A closely related pick is Khepren Thuram. The Nice midfielder has also attracted interest from Newcastle, but the warblers have recently withdrawn.
As a result, Liverpool will be able to complete a deal for the 22-year-old for around £38.5m, if all goes to plan. Another player linked with a move to Anfield is Borussia Mönchengladbach central midfielder Manu Kone. This season, Kone has made 31 appearances for the German club, scoring one goal and adding one assist.
Thuram and Kone typically play in defensive midfield positions, so this is clearly an area Klopp is looking to improve on this summer.
With that in mind, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool sign both players. What seems certain, however, is that Nunes won't be signing for the Reds anytime soon.
