According to sources that spoke with 90min, Aston Villa is looking to close a deal to sign Sevilla's sporting director Monchi.
Since taking over Sevilla in 2000, the 54-year-old is widely considered as one of the best sporting directors in all of football.
His lone absence from Sevilla occurred in 2017, when he spent two years with Roma in Italy before coming home. Later, Monchi turned down the opportunity to work with former Sevilla manager Unai Emery at Arsenal, but insiders have now told 90min that he will have another chance.
Before Emery moved for Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, the two spent three years together at Sevilla, but they remained close.
Monchi has the chance to join Emery at Villa Park now that the club has given him a contract. Villa made the move to sign Monchi in response to the recent loss of Christian Purslow and after missing out on Mateu Alemany of Barcelona, who changed his mind about joining the team after previously agreeing to do so.
European League champions Sevilla is seeking roughly £2 million in damages from Monchi, whose contract has one year remaining. Even before Villa's offer, Monchi is thought to have notified the La Liga team that he intended to leave this summer.
Sources from the villa have told 90min that an offer has been made, and they are now awaiting word on his choice.
Jose Castro, the president of Sevilla, said to Canal Sur over the weekend that he is still hoping to convince Monchi to stay with the team. "It has only been four days since we won the title, but this issue has arisen swiftly.
"It was a little unexpected, but we hope he'll change his mind and stick with us. There are no unhealable scars if he changes his mind, especially since Monchi is one of us.
"We must not forget that he already left once, and I was the one who told him that the doors were still open."
