Due to Jurrien Timber's declaration that his future at Ajax is uncertain, Manchester United and Liverpool now have a chance to pursue him.
The Dutch defender, 21, progressed from Ajax's junior team to their senior squad, although there has long been rumor that he would be going.
Timber, who was born in Utrecht, has been evasive when questioned about his future with his present club for more than a year while two Premier League clubs battle to sign him to an English contract.
Timber responded: "Will I stay with Ajax anyway?" to the question posed by the Dutch website Vandaag Inside. I'm unsure; I'm unable to state that.
I'm not currently in contact with Ajax. Although my agent and I have had some enjoyable conversations, nothing major is being discussed at the moment.
As of right now, Timber is committed to Ajax through the summer of 20205.
With manager Erik ten Hag having previously worked with the defender at Ajax and being rumored to be invested in an acquisition since coming at Old Trafford last summer, Manchester United would be the heavy favorites to sign Timber.
At the 2023 FA Cup final, which was held at Wembley Stadium in London and saw ten Hag's team lose 2-1 to Manchester City, Timber was also present.
Liverpool is a more recent participant in the Timber race, but it is widely believed that Jurgen Klopp's Reds will add a defender to complement their redesigned midfield during the summer season.
Virgil van Dijk, a fellow Dutchman, asserted that Timber was more skilled now than he was at age 21.
Although he had previously stayed with his boyhood club Ajax "out of love," Timber stated back in April that "a transfer is getting closer and closer."
Timber has appeared in 15 games for the Dutch national team and 121 games for the senior Ajax team.
Jurrien Timber leaves the door open for Manchester United and Liverpool to try and woo him away from Ajax.
