According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City could eclipse one of Manchester United's biggest transfer fees this summer by signing a world-class star who is also being sought after by Chelsea.

Man City have just ended an incredible season by adding the Champions League trophy to their Premier League title and FA Cup. They beat Inter 1-0 in the Champions League final in Istanbul to become only the second English team to win the treble of those three illustrious titles, after Sir Alex Ferguson's Man Utd in 1999.

Guardiola has now won Europe's elite club competition three times, with two previous victories with Barcelona in 2009 and 2011.

However, as Man City midfielder Rodri has warned, The Citizens will not stop there. They want to keep the Champions League trophy while continuing to dominate the Premier League.

Reports suggest that Guardiola will remain as City manager until the end of his contract until June 2025. As such, club fans can expect huge transfers. over the next few months or two years as Guardiola aims to rebuild what has been his incredible legacy. .

One player that City want to bring in is RB Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol. Chelsea tried to sign Gvardiol for around £77m last summer but were unable to bring the 21-year-old to England. Chelsea are still interested in Gvardiol because they want him to reunite with Christopher Nkunku under Mauricio Pochettino. However, there is now a real possibility that Gvardiol will come to City instead.

In an interview with CaughtOffside, Romano explained how Gvardiol could become the world's most expensive defender this summer.

Romano talks about Man City's great potential

“Over €80m (£69m), the most expensive centre-back in the history of football was the idea of ??RB Leipzig,” revealed Romano. "I'm not sure 80 million euros or 85 million euros (£73 million) is enough. Sources close to Leipzig believe it could cost around €100m (£86m) to sign Gvardiol this summer.

"Leipzig knows they will probably lose a lot of other players. Nkunku is going to Chelsea, let's see what happens to [Dominik] Szoboszlai.

“For them, it is really important to make sure that Gvardiol only leaves for the big money, otherwise they are willing to keep the player for another season and sell him for a record amount in the summer of next year. 2024.

"Man City will try, for sure they will try because they like the player, Guardiola likes the player so let's see how they talk."

If Gvardiol goes to Man City, it is considered that he will break Man Utd's transfer record. Currently, the most expensive defender in the world is Harry Maguire, who moved to Old Trafford for £80 million four years ago. And it looks like City will certainly have the money to make such a big move, as their transfer budget this summer is said to top £300m.

The Croatia international's move will likely go much better than that of Maguire. Gvardiol is considered one of the best young defenders in the world and is already one of Leipzig's best players despite his young age. That means he should adapt well at City and continue to give his best, which is fantastic. Meanwhile, Maguire has always been a controversial figure at Man Utd, despite being their captain. And he is likely to leave the club this summer, when Tottenham, Newcastle and Aston Villa all want to.
