The 37-year-old has agreed to a one-year contract with a 12-month extension option.

James Milner has joined Brighton on a free transfer from Liverpool, a rival in the Premier League.

The former England international has signed a one-year deal with an additional 12-month option at the Amex Stadium.

I'm delighted to welcome James to Brighton, head coach Roberto De Zerbi of Albion said on the team's website.

He's a great addition to our team, and I have no doubt that he will help us reach new heights.

Between 2009 and 2016, Milner, who earned 61 international caps, played for Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Manchester City in addition to Leeds, where his career began.

During his eight years at Anfield, the 37-year-old won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup.

After his Reds contract expires on June 30, he will move to Brighton and give De Zerbi's team more experience in front of the club's inaugural Europa League campaign.

"His experience speaks for itself with the amount of games he has played and the trophies he has won throughout a decorated career," Seagulls technical director David Weir said.

The fact that these games include European competition will be very helpful to us as we begin our first season in Europe.

With 619 appearances, Milner is presently third all-time in the Premier League behind Ryan Giggs (632) and Gareth Barry (652).

The veteran midfielder, who can also play fullback, is Brighton's second summer addition after Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, who set a club record in his departure from Watford.

How can James Milner fit into Roberto De Zerbi's starting XI after joining Brighton on a free transfer from Premier League rivals Liverpool?

Between 2009 and 2016, Milner, who earned 61 international caps, played for Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Manchester City in addition to Leeds, where his career began. During his eight years at Anfield, the 37-year-old won the Premier League, the Champions League, the FA Cup, and the Carabao Cup.
