When the 53-year-old former Barcelona star was transferred to Goodison Park from Saints, who had placed sixth and qualified for the Europa League, Southampton reportedly earned an estimated £5 million in compensation.
After the sides reached a three-year agreement, chairman Bill Kenwright stated of Koeman: "We are really pleased to have secured the man who was our number one target from the moment we set out to appoint a new manager."
Everton had a fleeting chance to move into the top four when Martinez first took over; the team finished fifth in 2013–14 and only missed out on the Champions League because of a collapse in the closing weeks.
