Manchester United have been given a deadline to complete a move for Chelsea star Mason Mount this summer, according to a report.

United manager Erik ten Hag has targeted to sign Mount to bolster his midfield options for next season.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the English midfielder will take on the same role as current Christian Eriksen if he moves to Old Trafford.

And United have made a 40m offer for the 24-year-old. However, Chelsea rejected the offer. Advertisement

Mount has one year left on his current contract with the Blues. Negotiations, allegedly led by the club's co-owner Todd Boehly, have taken place, but the Three Lions star has yet to agree new terms.

The main sticking point is the asking price. Fabrizio Romano has stated that Chelsea will not accept a bid of less than 80 million euros (about 68 million) for one of their key players.

However, according to one report, they may have no choice but to sell if United get close to that fee. Advertisement

Man Utd set 'deadline' for Mount transfer

According to The Athletic, Chelsea will incur a substantial loss on player swaps (coming and going) during the latest Financial Fair Play (FFP).

They can reduce these losses by selling players. However, they must do so by June 30 for any sales to count towards the calculations for the current season.

If any deals are made after that date, they will count towards the next FFP period - and it is unlikely the club will penalize a spend as has happened this season.

Chelsea spent more than 500m on players during the season, including acquiring Enzo Fernandez for a UK record transfer fee of 106.8m. In terms of FFP, the fee is essentially split into installments over the Argentine's eight-and-a-half-year contract, minimizing the impact on the overall balance.

But an acceptable offer from United for Mount could get the Chelsea academy graduate sold this summer - and with Arsenal expressing a keen interest in attacking midfielder Kai Havertz. The Blues, both players can bring in the London club the big money he desperately needs.
