Manchester United have confirmed the departure of Axel Tuanzebe after returning from half a season on loan at Stoke City

Axel Tuanzebe has received an attractive offer from Manchester United as he severed ties with the club after 17 years.

The centre-back was just eight years old when he joined Man Utd's academy and has already captained the club at all ages, making 37 first-team appearances. It was hoped his loan spells at Aston Villa and Napoli would help him get back to their usual way of thinking, but injury hit and after a back problem worsened last summer, he spent the second half of last season on loan at Stoke City in the Championship.

He is currently among the players to be let go, with Stoke supporters waiting to see if Alex Neil has the support to bring the 25-year-old back and pursue him as part of a major rebuild in summer or not.

Man Utd released a statement to mark his time at the club, including a memorable night in the Champions League when he held on to Kylian Mbappe - beating the French superstar in a two-foot race times - in a 2-1 win over Paris Saint Germain in the 2019/20 season. He read:

"(Tuanzebe)'s departure is emotional for the player and for the many people at the club who have known him and helped nurture him over the years. A man of good character, his departure from United was appreciated by everyone. respect as a merit to himself and his family.

"Everyone at the club wish Axel the best of luck as he begins the next chapter of his career. We would also like to thank him for always representing Manchester United with class and dignity."

Tuanzebe was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo before moving to Rochdale as a young boy and "quickly established himself as a powerful, skillful and authoritative leader in Carrington". He was named the club's Young Player of the Year 2015 and the Substitute Player of the Year 2017. He has only made four appearances for Stoke, who currently have two senior centre-backs - Ben Wilmot and Connor Taylor - on their roster. Dion Sanderson and Michael Rose are among the other players linked with the move to bet365 Stadium.
