Manchester United have identified Chelsea ace Mason Mount as an ideal candidate to bolster their midfield options.
After the first three games of his career at Manchester United, Christian Eriksen must have begun to wonder if he would come.
After being assigned a virtual number 9 on his debut against Brighton & Hove Albion on the opening day of the 2022/23 season, the Denmark international was then tasked with playing United's defensive midfielder six days later in the match. 0-4 loss to Brentford. Unsurprisingly, the seasoned attacking midfielder was powerless to stop the Bees that brought United to such an extent from being wiped out.
But after two failed trials, Erik ten Hag succeeded on the third, deploying Eriksen in midfield in a 2-1 win over Liverpool. It marked the former Tottenham Hotspur ace's best performance in a United shirt up to that point and it was a move that proved instrumental in helping the club beat Brighton and Brentford behind them.
Although Eriksen arrived at Old Trafford last summer with a reputation as one of the best attacking midfielders in football, it was at No. 8 that he flourished, deciding games with depth. As Casemiro settles into his new surroundings, their relationship becomes important.
But despite all their successes together in the 2022/23 campaign, Eriksen's standards plummeted towards the end of the season, with fatigue and fatigue clearly an issue. The Dane is now in his 30s and United need younger feet in the engine room. Of course, they have identified Chelsea ace Mason Mount as the solution to the problem and have agreed personal terms with him, although they have yet to agree on a transfer fee with the Londoner. Like Eriksen, when he moved to Old Trafford almost 12 months ago, Mount was seen by many as an attacking midfielder, often assuming he would play in the No 10 position week in, week out.
Although he is more than capable of playing there, by his own admission, he is also capable of operating in the No. 8, just like Eriksen. In fact, he considers it his best role.
Speaking last November, Mount said:
“I like to think of myself as a traditional midfielder even though I can play many roles for the team. I always say I'm better at number 8 and I've been playing there since I was very young.
"I like to work from area to area, assisting in defense but also going forward to score goals and provide assists for the team. That's where I think my strengths are. I'm flexible so I can like that. relax and play higher or go much deeper."
Mount is similar to Eriksen, in that he is seen as a creative midfielder but not necessarily a forward. He can control games from deeper areas, like Eriksen has done this season, and will have the legs to move around the pitch and channel the energy Ten Hag often needs from his midfielders.
Ten Hag when choosing a midfield three likes to have a defensive midfielder Casemiro; someone who is good at everything, capable of doing a little bit of everything, who would be Mount; and a senior midfielder, that is Bruno Fernandes. Casemiro performs best when playing alongside a traditional box-to-box midfielder who isn't afraid to control the game deep and then move forward with the ball.
