There has been a surge in killings amongst young men and women who for obvious reasons are believed to be in a love affair in Ghana .
Issues pertaining to murder has raised eyebrows ever since, but it seems murdering is the quickest solution to resolve misunderstanding in relationships of late . The young and the old now are resorting to using various deadly methods to resolve misunderstanding which is very bad .
Many people who are supposedly involved in a love affair being it marriage , dating , courtship or whatsoever are engulfed in fear as their safety is not guaranteed bearing any misunderstanding that may arise .
According to a report by the Ghana Police service , there were 123 reported cases of domestic violence in the first quarter alone, with 67% of the victims being women.
This has got a lot of people talking including experts, who attributes these ungodly and unlawful acts to a variety of factors including poverty , lack of education, advice from peers , influence of the media and western culture and lastly popular culture .
Men who are at the helm of affairs in these recent killings, actually feel they are not been treated well by their partners because they might have invested too much bearing the economic hardship in the country . In the event that one actually suspects the partner to be cheating , the best revenge is to take the life of the other partner . However, many fail to actually make a thorough investigation on their partner before entering into a love journey or they turn a blind eye whenever they are abused in a situation where they have conflicting ideas . Whatever the case may be , taking another person’s life is not the ideal thing to do .
On the April 20th ,2023 a police man allegedly took the life of his girlfriend in Adum a suburb in kumasi after both were spotted to be involved in a heated argument by an eye witness.
Another murder case happened days after , when a trotro driver allegedly also killed his girlfriend in Asuoyeboah .
A married man did no better than the two by butchering his wife to death on May 2, 2023 after the deceased wife raised an issue of a divorce . This incident happened in Nungua Accra .
The toll goes on and on as a 27 year old man also allegedly murdered his 23- year old girlfriend in Dunkwa on issues of him suspecting his girlfriend to be cheating with another man.
Recently, a barber left his girlfriend in a pool of blood rendering her lifeless one faithful afternoon, after the deceased returned from school on account of him feeling the girl might be cheating .
A lady in Ayigya Zongo a town in the Kumasi municipality stabbed his boyfriend to death during an argument .
In Western region , a cocoa farmer also killed his wife over food argument.
Clearly , these cases exposes the mental health of many Ghanaians to be very poor , bad and devastating. Why ? Because majority of the youth and the aged have showed that their only antidote to relationship issues is by taking the life of their significant other .
This should be an issue of national interest in the sense that almost every week , a murder case is recorded across the length and breadth of the country and it has a connection with relationship issues . Personality differs and people’s reaction to situations also is dynamic but the act of killing your partner just because he or she might have rejected , or suspects to be cheating is something the nation must put in measures to curb them .
One way of curbing this menace is through the enforcement of agencies like the NCCE and other security agencies to work . Public forums should be organised in churches ,mosques, markets , town centers , media platforms both online and print to address this issue . People should be taught how to deal with matters arising in their relationships by e seeking help from a counsellor or talking to someone much older who can give advice pertaining to the problem at hand .
Strict laws should be meted out to culprits to serve as a deterent . #SAYNOTORELATIONSHIPKILLINGS !
