In a recent address, the President of Ghana urged citizens to plant trees in their localities to protect the environment and contribute to global efforts to mitigate climate change. The President emphasized that tree planting is one of the surest ways to address the climate problem, and his government is committed to protecting the environment.
To enhance the country's forest cover and protect natural resources, the government of Ghana has launched several initiatives and programs. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. Samuel A. Jinapor, has announced community-based management programs aimed at addressing deforestation in the country. These include the Ghana Forest Plantation Strategy, the Forest Investment Programme, the National Alternative Employment and Livelihood Programme, the Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project, and the Cocoa and Forests Initiative.
The Forest Plantation Strategy has already cultivated over 690,000 hectares of forest between 2017 and 2022 through various initiatives such as forest plantation, enrichment planting, and trees-on-farm. Also, the Green Streets Project, launched by the Ministry, involves planting trees in the medians of roads and along major streets to enhance the aesthetic appeal of cities and promote a healthy and sustainable environment.
Recently, the country celebrated Green Ghana Day, which aimed to plant 10 million trees. The initiative will help nurture the 23 million mature trees planted in the past two years. The Ministry and Forestry Commission will provide support for nurturing these trees, but every citizen is encouraged to take responsibility for nurturing trees in their homes, offices, and communities.
The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, emphasized the need to educate Ghanaians on sustainable practices that can help protect the country's forests. Sustainable practices such as responsible use of natural resources, reducing plastic waste, and adopting renewable energy sources can significantly contribute to the protection of the environment.
Lastly, the government of Ghana is taking proactive measures to protect the country's forests and natural resources through community-based management programs. Every citizen is encouraged to take responsibility for nurturing trees in their homes offices and communities and adopting sustainable practices to protect the environment.
