Former Liverpool favorite Michael Owen made a controversial move to Manchester United in 2009 despite Jamie Carragher's best efforts.

Despite scoring 158 goals for Liverpool, helping the Reds win a historic treble and even winning the Ballon d'Or for his personal efforts, Michael Owen is not a well-known figure among the Kopites.

Of course, he led Gerard Houllier's side and wore the famous red shirt. Even after he left Real Madrid in the summer of 2004, Liverpool fans chanted: "There's only one Michael Owen!" during the 2005 European Super Cup win over CSKA Moscow amid rumors the Red Devils were in talks to re-sign the striker.

Alas, Liverpool were left out of such a move when Newcastle United offered a club-record £17m bid for the striker. On his first return to Anfield with the Magpies, instead of names being chanted, Kopites sang: "Where have you been in Istanbul?" in connection with the club's 2005 Champions League win a few months earlier. But the fatal blow to Owen's relationship with fans of his former club was his controversial decision to join their bitter rivals Manchester United in the summer of 2009. He has repeatedly defended such a decision, insisting he could be on a free transfer after Newcastle's relegation, Liverpool have rejected attempts to return to Anfield, and he stands before the Devils' choice. red, Everton or Hull City.

Unsurprisingly, however, that hasn't convinced Reds supporters, who see such a move to Old Trafford as the ultimate betrayal.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, Owen's close friend after joining the Reds' first team just a few months apart in the 1996/97 season, tried to thwart his controversial transfer but his attempt failed. are all useless.

"Someone told me, I know, and I'll call you right back," he revealed when Owen appeared on his Best Game podcast in February 2020. "You said 'Yes, I'll sign in two days'.

"I contacted Rafa and said, 'Look, Owen is free and he will sign for Man United in two days. Like it or not, do it to crush Man United.'

“'He's happy to be on the bench, whatever. I think - now you're watching it and I think we just signed David Ngog and they said 'No, we don't want to do that, let it go'."

Although Carragher was ultimately unable to stop Owen from joining United despite his best efforts, there was one thing he desperately wanted to know after the striker completed his transfer. Speaking to Football Ramble in September 2018, Owen shared what his former Liverpool team-mate sent him shortly after his Manchester United debut.

Owen said: “I always remember the first time I walked off the pitch and looked at my phone in the dressing room.

"Carragher texts me - we're great friends. It'll say, 'Call me as soon as you can marry me, I want you to let me know the conversation with Fergie's team was like that. any.'

Owen then spent three years at Old Trafford, scoring 17 goals in 52 appearances, winning the Premier League and League Cup with the club, before ending his career with a disappointing season at Stoke City. .
