Less than seven months after being hired as the club's permanent head coach, Bournemouth has fired Gary O'Neil.

Following the firing manager Scott Parker at the end of August, O'Neil led the Cherries to Premier League safety the previous season.

The hiring of a new head coach will soon be made public, according to a club statement.

Bill Foley, owner of Bournemouth, said: "I will always be grateful for Gary's achievement last season. The best way for us to position ourselves for the upcoming season was considered when making this difficult decision.

Following a 9-0 thumping at Liverpool, O'Neil first succeeded Parker on an interim basis before being named permanently in November.

The 40-year-old helped the Cherries, who had just been promoted from the Championship, avoid relegation by collecting 36 points from his 34 games in charge of the top division.

"As a club, we have put plans in place for long-term success with improvements being made to infrastructure, most notably the development of a new state-of-the-art training facility and the ongoing discussions around upgrades to our stadium," continued the American Foley, who finished taking over the south-coast club in December.

This summer, we have also selected a number of key targets, and we think this shift in strategy will give us the best chance to land them.

Postecoglou left for Tottenham earlier this month, and Rodgers, who was without a team after being fired from Leicester City in April, was quickly pursued by Celtic.

Before moving to the King Power Stadium, Rodgers enjoyed three productive years with Celtic, winning two league championships before leaving midway through his last season to join Leicester, where he remained while the Scottish team won a further championship.

Rodgers is back in charge at Celtic Park after a four-year absence.

Rodgers stated, "I am absolutely thrilled to be returning to Celtic and I am extremely enthused by this tremendous chance. "When I was offered the opportunity to be asked to join the club once more, my family and I made the decision quite easily.
