After a great season for both the player and the team, Gundogan's current contract at City is set to expire at the end of June. However, Barcelona has made an offer to the 32-year-old to try to entice him to Camp Nou.

Despite their best efforts, 90min understands that Barcelona has long been confident of securing the player's services this summer. Guardiola recently disclosed that sporting director Txiki Begiristain is working on a new contract for the midfielder.

Barcelona has extended a two-year contract to Gundogan at Camp Nou with a one-year extension option. The player's family's desire to reside in Spain has also been confirmed by sources.

Guardiola, however, is not yet ready to concede defeat.

Guardiola stated at the Puma Legends golf tournament, "We are interested in renewing his contract and [Barcelona] are also interested.

"I'm hoping he sticks around. We are still battling to keep him with us. We will exert every effort to keep him, but we are aware that Barca want him.Barça will have a fantastic footballer on their hands if they sign him. I know Xavi has called him frequently. I will assure him he will have fun if he ultimately chooses Barca.

Gundogan is one of several City players who have been linked to moves away from the Etihad Stadium this summer. Bernardo Silva is another player who wants to leave the club.

The ambitious intentions of American billionaire Foley, who finished buying the Dorset club in December, include a brand-new cutting-edge training facility and ongoing negotiations about improvements to the Vitality Stadium.

The 78-year-old remarked of O'Neil's departure: "Gary's accomplishment last season is one I will always be grateful for.Though it was a challenging choice, it was one that was carefully considered in order to put us in the best possible position for the upcoming season.

"Gary will have a long career as a head coach or manager, but we believe that, at this time, a change is best for this football club," the statement reads.
