Manchester United are considering alternatives to signing Mason Mount this summer, with Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze being eyed by the club, among others.
Erik ten Hag has made Mount a top summer destination as the midfielder, who has one year left on his current contract at Stamford Bridge, is eager to move to Old Trafford.
An opening bid of £40m for United was rejected by Chelsea this week, with the Blues valuing the 24-year-old at nearly £70m.
Although the Manchester club is ready to increase their bid to £50m, it will likely be the last one as they are unwilling to pay more for a player who will be available on a free transfer next year. United could move on to other destinations if Chelsea stays. According to journalist Steve Bates and Give Me Sport, the club is exploring other midfield options including Eze.
The 24-year-old has been on United's radar since the start of the year and enjoyed a stellar second half of the season earning a place in Gareth Southgate's England squad.
Tottenham and Liverpool are among the teams interested in the attacking midfielder, along with Paris Saint-Germain.
Eze could be a cheaper alternative to Mount as former United captain Gary Neville recently questioned the club's pursuit of the Chelsea star.
"To be honest I was surprised by Mason Mount," Neville told Metro.co.uk.
For the transfer fee quoted... he's a very good player, I don't question that.
“But I saw the players United already had, namely Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Fred and Scott McTominay. Do I think Mason Mount is the player who will fix everything? I'm not entirely sure.
"Mason Mount would be a very good addition to the Manchester United squad but it is a lot of money to add to the squad." After the takeover, Manchester United boss Erik Ten Hag is set to complete all his signings before the start of their pre-season.
