Fabinho has not been in great form for Liverpool over the past year but looks set to keep his place at Anfield next season as his successors are likely to go elsewhere.

Jürgen Klopp's squad has declined in quality over the past 12 months, with many reliable German strikers simply struggling to become as effective as they once were. With the exception of Alisson Becker, many of Anfield's elite players have become shadows of their former selves.

Fabinho is certainly one of them, with the former Brazil international being known for his intensity, aggressiveness, timing and physicality. After signing with the Reds from AS Monaco in 2018, he has become a quintessential Merseyside fire extinguisher, but one who keeps a cool head no matter what surrounds him. Indeed, at his best, Fabinho has grown calm amid the Liverpool storm, with Pep Lijnders once describing him as a "lighthouse" for the team. Klopp has his own nickname for the Reds' number 3, having called him 'Dyson' years ago due to his ability to sweep loose balls like a vacuum cleaner.

"I like the fact that there are plays and movements that I can predict to block certain passes," he told UEFA last year. "I like to steal the ball, take the ball from the opponent and often depending on where you get the ball you can put your teammates in a good attacking position. I think that's what I like to do the most."

Klopp also spoke about his importance to his team on the defensive side of the game, saying:

“He saved our lives. He gives us the opportunity to play the way we play, with both centre-backs, so we can really focus on attack."

Now 29 years old, Fabinho has just had the worst season of his career. Liverpool conceded too many goals and chances, sitting fifth in the Premier League table and not winning a single silver trophy, after leaving every cup competition in mid-March.

The South American midfielder is responsible for many of the attacks his teammates fall victim to, which is why his place on the team has been contested by some sections of the fans. With Fabinho potentially past his prime, Klopp could consider replacing him this summer.

However, that seems unlikely. Liverpool are linked with a host of midfield players, but almost none of them have played from the start like Fabinho, with the Red Devils pursuing more qualified players like Mason Mount, Ryan Gravenberch, Képhren Thuram and Alexis Mac Allister, newcomers to them.

João Palhinha is one of those midfielders it seems Liverpool won't be targeting.

João Palhinha is one of the few starters believed to be moving to Anfield. The Fulham mainstay has impressed in the Premier League since arriving in England last summer, which is why he has emerged as a possible threat to Fabinho's future. Palhinha has captured Fabinho's nuances this season, showing real effort and fighting on the pitch. In fact, he has led the division in tackles and interceptions with a notable total of 193 this season, putting him in a league of his own ahead of Moisés Caicedo in No. two with 156, followed by Idrissa Gana Gueye with 153 and Declan Rice. out of 142.

The latter could be set to boost transfers for Fabinho. Rice is set to leave West Ham United, potentially joining Arsenal.
