QUAYSON REQUESTS A REVIEW OF THE DAILY HEARING IN HIS CRIMINAL CASE.

James Gyakye Quayson's perjury and forgery trial will be heard continuously starting today, June 20, 2023, in the High Court in Accra. 


However, Quayson requested a review of the court's decision for the matter to be heard every day starting Monday.

According to the prosecution, when Mr. Quayson sought a Ghanaian passport, he falsely claimed to the Passport Office that he didn't have a passport for another nation.


Additionally, the prosecution claims that Mr. Quayson made a false statement to the Electoral Commission about his lack of allegiance to any foreign nation. when he submitted his petition to run for the Assin North seat.

Justice Mary Maame Ekue Yanzuh's court rejected Quayson's attorney Justin Terriwajjah's request to have the trial continued beyond the Assin North by-election, which is scheduled for June 27, 2023. 


Arguments The defence lawyer claimed that his client was fulfilling a civic responsibility by running for parliament in the Assin North constituency. As a result, the trial needed to resume after the by-election so that Quayson would have a fair playing field during the campaign.



Quayson's intention to run in the by-election was characterised as a "voluntary and selfish quest" by Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame, who was opposed to it. to the prayer, emphasising that Quayson had not been assigned a national task.


He contended that a speedy trial was necessary to determine Quayson's legal standing since, given the allegations brought against him, he may be found guilty and sentenced to prison.


Therefore, he requested that the matter be heard in court every day starting next week.


Mr. Terriwajjah agreed that the trial should proceed daily, but he begged that it should only be done after the by-election.



The court subsequently rejected his request.


The trial will proceed on June 20, 21, and 23, according to a date set by the court.


In the run-up to the 2020 Assin North parliamentary election, Quayson is accused of forgery and perjury in connection with a number of alleged violations. His attorneys will continue to cross-examine the first prosecution witness.


In court was the defendant, Quayson, who is running for office in a by-election under the banner of the National Democratic Congress.



Five counts of forgery of a passport or travel document, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office have been brought against Mr. Quayson by state prosecutors.
