Pochettino sets new triple Chelsea plan after £71m decision changes transfer priority

Mauricio Pochettino's recent decision regarding Chelsea's goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga, has had a significant impact on the club's summer transfer plans. Initially, signing a new striker, central midfielder, and goalkeeper were considered the top priorities for the team. However, Pochettino's belief that he can elevate Kepa's performance to the next level has led to a shift in focus.

The Argentine coach, along with goalkeeping coach Toni Jimenez, is confident in Kepa's potential and aims to work on his development. While Kepa has shown glimpses of brilliance throughout his time at Chelsea, his performances have been inconsistent, marked by costly errors. Despite this, Pochettino's decision to make Kepa the first-choice goalkeeper has caused the club to reconsider their pursuit of Andre Onana from Inter.

Previously, Onana was the primary target to strengthen Chelsea's goalkeeping options. However, discussions revolving around Romelu Lukaku's future prompted the club to deem Onana's price tag of £50 million too high. Instead, the Blues are now seeking a backup goalkeeper who can compete with Kepa for the starting position. Potential options include Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, Gregor Kobel, and Diogo Costa, both of whom have attracted previous interest from Chelsea.

Furthermore, Chelsea's transfer strategy has been further altered by the possible availability of funds not spent on a marquee goalkeeper signing. This could enable them to pursue other targets, with Brighton's Moises Caicedo emerging as a key target. Brighton's valuation of the player has risen to around £100 million, providing Chelsea with an opportunity to meet the Seagulls' demands.

In addition to addressing their goalkeeper situation and potential midfield reinforcement, the Blues are also considering bolstering their frontline. Reports from Italian journalist Rudy Galetti indicate Pochettino's interest in working with Juventus striker Dusan Vlahovic. Chelsea is currently evaluating whether to pursue a move for the talented forward.

Overall, Pochettino's decision to focus on Kepa's development has prompted Chelsea to revise their summer transfer plans. While the pursuit of a new goalkeeper remains, the club's priorities have shifted to securing a backup option and targeting other positions such as midfield and potentially the striker role. With funds potentially available for additional signings, Chelsea aims to make the most of the transfer window to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
