The murder case of Victoria Dapaah, also known as Maa Adwoa, has been making headlines in Ghana. The 26-year-old was allegedly killed by her boyfriend, police inspector Ahmed Twumasi, on April 20, 2023, just a few meters away from her house in Adum.
During the committal proceedings, Twumasi entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of murder. The state attorney read out the brief facts of the case, and while Twumasi refused to answer any other questions without his lawyer present, he stated that he would call witnesses as needed.
The state attorney presented evidence, including the service pistol allegedly used in the crime and CCTV footage capturing the scene, as part of the committal process, outlining Twumasi's alleged involvement in the crime.
The family of the deceased has been demanding justice, and tensions have been running high in court. To prevent any assault on the suspect, heightened security was present at the court.
However, family members of the deceased still attempted to physically attack the suspect, causing chaos that required police reinforcement. Some of the angry family members even pelted stones at the police vehicle after the suspect was whisked away from the court.
Despite the drama, the Asokore Mampong district court committed Twumasi to stand trial at the high court starting on July 13, 2023, at 10 am. The high court will take full charge of the trial from that date.
It is important to note that Twumasi has been remanded into prison custody and is still awaiting trial. The case has sparked widespread interest and concern in Ghana, with many people watching closely to see how the trial will unfold and what justice will be served for the late Victoria Dapaah.
The tragic story of Victoria Dapaah has brought the issue of domestic violence to the forefront of public discussion in Ghana. It is a reminder that more needs to be done to address this issue and protect vulnerable individuals from harm.
As the trial continues, we hope that justice will be served and that the memory of Victoria Dapaah will not be forgotten.
