After an illustrious 20-year journey in professional football, former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has officially declared his retirement from the sport. Gyan, who embarked on his footballing odyssey as a young teenager in 2003, has now decided to hang up his boots in 2023, leaving behind a remarkable legacy that includes an impressive tally of over 250 goals.


The announcement of his retirement came during his speech at The 30th Afreximbank Annual Meetings held at the prestigious Accra International Conference Centre on a memorable Tuesday evening. Gyan's decision to bid farewell to the beautiful game has marked the end of an era, leaving fans and football enthusiasts reminiscing about his extraordinary contributions to the sport.


He said, “I want to take this great opportunity, a stage that is difficult in every footballer’s career, a moment all footballers do not wish, but when nature dawns, that thin voice will keep echoing into the ears… it is time… that voice has been clear in my ears, and I have succumbed to it, it is time. It is time to hand the jersey and boots in glory as I officially retire from active football.”

At the age of 37, Asamoah Gyan's retirement has marked the culmination of an extraordinary journey that propelled him to become Ghana's all-time leading scorer. With an impressive record of 51 goals in 109 appearances for his national team, Gyan etched his name in the history books.


His contributions to Ghana's football legacy extended beyond the national team, as he played a pivotal role in three FIFA World Cup tournaments. Particularly memorable was his exceptional performance in the 2010 edition held in South Africa, where he played a crucial role in guiding Ghana to the quarterfinals, a historic achievement for the nation. Gyan's six goals in the tournament set a record for the highest number of goals scored by any African player.


As his retirement marks the end of an era, Gyan's exceptional accomplishments and indelible impact on Ghanaian football will forever be celebrated and cherished by fans around the world.


Gyan also had a successful club career. He played for several clubs around the world, including Udinese in Italy, Rennes in France, Sunderland in the English Premier League, and Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates, where he was a huge success and eventually became the club’s second-all-time leading scorer with 128 goals.


Gyan last played for Legon Cities in the Ghana Premier League, having started at Liberty Professionals.
