In her recently released memoir titled "I Am Not Yvonne Nelson," the renowned Ghanaian actress and movie producer expressed her regret over a photograph she took with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his election victory in 2016.
Yvonne Nelson, known for her outspoken nature, claimed that the president had not lived up to expectations in terms of general governance and economic management.
Ms. Nelson spoke about her involvement in the 2015 #DumsorMustStop protest, which was held in response to the severe power crisis, known as "dumsor," that had plagued Ghana. The crisis resulted in significant job losses and adversely impacted small-scale enterprises heavily reliant on electricity.
According to her, the opposition won the election because the incumbent National Democratic Congress (NDC) had failed to resolve the crisis at a reasonable cost and through transparent procurement deals.
Ms. Nelson and some friends congratulated President-elect Nana Akufo-Addo when he won the 2016 election. At that time, he was presented as an incorruptible leader and the antidote to corruption in the public sector and political space.
However, she now feels that he has fallen short of expectations and has turned out to be a monumental disappointment. She criticized his government's unbridled borrowing, corruption, and reckless spending, which she believes have plunged the nation into economic dumsor.
In her book, Ms. Nelson also disclosed that she was contacted by a person close to the president to become the parliamentary candidate of the New Patriotic Party for the Ayawso West Wuogon Constituency in the 2020 general elections.
Ms. Nelson's memoir is a frank and revealing account of her life and career, and it provides insights into the challenges and complexities of the Ghanaian political landscape.
Her critique of President Nana Akufo-Addo's government is a powerful reminder of the importance of holding leaders accountable and the need for transparency and good governance.
Overall, her book is a thought-provoking read that sheds light on some of the most pressing issues facing Ghana today.
