Roy Keane recalled the time he chased former referee Andy D'Urso around Old Trafford.

In January 2000, during the clash between Manchester United and Middlesbrough at Old Trafford, D'Urso was involved in one of the most memorable moments in Premier League history.

As the game was drawing 0-0, the Billericay-born referee awarded the visitors a controversial penalty when United defender Jaap Stam collided with Brazilian striker Juninho.

Moments later, Stam, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, Ryan Giggs and Dennis Irwin surrounded D'Urso before an angry Roy Keane stormed past his teammates to confront the referee.

Juninho missed from 12 yards and United then took all three points thanks to David Beckham's winning goal in the 87th minute. But the incident involving Keane and D'Urso continues to be the biggest focus of this clash. In fact, Keane recently revealed about this moment on an episode of The Overlap.

After Gary Neville said his former teammate had never been harsh on the referee, Keane responded:

"I didn't think it was that bad at the time, you think you're just fighting your corner and then you look and walk away.

"I think some [of the photos] have been edited. No, I swear, I swear on my children's lives. I was right next to him, I didn't think we were that close.

"Yes, sure, I was [photoshopped]. And do you know who's behind it? Ferguson!"

Keane later apologized for his actions at the time. "We went above and beyond," he said. "Obviously we shouldn't have reacted like that. We're sorry and it won't happen again. I promise you that.

"Football players are under a lot of pressure, but dealing with it is part of the job. It's not fair that we try referees like that.

"As captain, I should set a better example. Going behind the referee was a mistake.

"We went above and beyond and the manager talked to us. At the time, we didn't think about it. We just thought it was a bad decision, and I watched the incident on TV and I still think the referee was wrong."

He added:

"But obviously we shouldn't react like that, even if he stood still, I don't think we would chase him. He kept running and we kept chasing him."
