According to the PA news agency, Newcastle is seeking to complete a club-record deal for AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali soon.

Dan Ashworth, the club's sporting director, has been spotted in the Italian city after traveling there to try to negotiate the details of a transfer that would reportedly cost more than the £60 million the club paid for Alexander Isak, a Swedish striker, last summer.

The 23-year-old, who is scheduled to skipper his nation in their opening Group D match at the European Under-21 Championships against France on Thursday evening, reportedly agreed to the swap.

If the negotiations are successful, Newcastle's spending on transfers under their new owners would surpass £300 million.

Tonali has been identified by head coach Eddie Howe as the holding midfielder he requires to enable Bruno Guimaraes in particular to flourish in an advanced role.

For the upcoming season, which will mark the first time the Magpies will compete in the Champions League since the 2002-03 campaign, Howe has vowed to enhance his team in an effort to contend on both the domestic and European fronts.

Last season, the 45-year-old led the team to a fourth-place Premier League finish and the Carabao Cup final as they made a significant advancement. This season, he expects a response from teams like Liverpool, Tottenham, and Chelsea in the battle for the top four.

Howe has been careful to emphasize the financial constraints that the club must operate under, but he has also made it clear that he intends to hire quality rather than quantity this summer.

Tonali started both legs of Milan's Champions League semifinal loss to city rivals Inter and made 48 appearances for Milan last season across all competitions. He was a substitute in the senior Italy team's 2-1 Euro 2024 qualifier loss to England in March.

In a statement, Motherwell said: "From watching games from the stands to participating in more than 50 games for the club. Harrogate Town now has Dean Cornelius on board.
