James Ward-Prowse, the captain of Southampton, is up for grabs, and Fulham is a strong candidate.

The midfielder, who is interested in moving to Craven Cottage, is being targeted by the Cottagers, the PA news agency has learned.

After being relegated from the Premier League last season, Southampton is set to demand close to £30 million for their captain, who still has three years left on his deal.

Declan Rice is to be replaced by Fulham's Joao Palhinha, which would allow the Cottagers to line up Ward-Prowse.

Despite champions Manchester City reportedly preparing their own offer, Arsenal has had two bids for Hammers captain Rice rejected this week.

Ward-Prowse, an England international, is also a target for the Hammers, but he would rather move to west London.

As he searches for a way to return to the top flight, the 28-year-old believes that Marco Silva's style is the perfect fit for him.

He would reunite with old Saints teammate Harrison Reed at Fulham, since the two attended the same St. Mary's academy.

Given their threat from set pieces, Brentford also expressed interest in Ward-Prowse, but the Saints star promptly turned them down.

After failing to retain Southampton in the Premier League after they finished last, he will quit the organization this summer.

They had three managers because Ruben Selles was unable to save the Saints, Nathan Jones replaced Ralph Hasenhuttl in November but only lasted 14 games before being fired.

On Wednesday, Southampton hired Swansea's Russell Martin on a three-year contract while the Swans were attempting to sign Barnsley's Michael Duff.

Without Ward-Prowse, who has made 409 appearances, scored 55 goals for the Saints, and is one goal shy of David Beckham's Premier League free-kick record of 18, Martin will have to mount a promotion push in the Championship.

Romeo Lavia, a midfielder desired by both Liverpool and Arsenal, might leave Saints as well.
