Hugo Lloris' long-term replacement hunt at Tottenham has been sped up by the commencement of negotiations with Empoli regarding the signing of goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.
Lloris, the 36-year-old captain of Tottenham, is approaching the end of his contract and made clear earlier this month that he was looking for a new challenge when he called his situation as "the end of an era" in a media interview in France. He has been with the team since 2012.
There have been talks with Brentford's David Raya about a potential transfer across the capital, but the move has been put on hold due to the £40 million price tag attached to the Spanish international.
With negotiations with Empoli ongoing, Tottenham has now turned its attention to Vicario and is optimistic that they will sign him.
The 26-year-old has been a standout for the mid-table Serie A team over the past two seasons, saving eight penalties during that time. To further emphasize his rising star, he has recently been called up to the Italy national team teams.
According to reports, a price of around 19 million euros (£16.4 million) will be sufficient to convince Vicario to leave Empoli.
After the permanent transfer of former loanee Dejan Kulusevski last weekend, it would be Ange Postecoglou's second acquisition since he was named head coach on June 6.
Although Postecoglou officially starts working for Tottenham on July 1, the club's first day of preseason, his coaching staff is still being finalized.
