The former president and an aspiring member of the National Democratic Congress, John Dramani Mahama has reiterated his maximum commitment to put an end to the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) which is conducted for prospective teachers when he assumes the position as the president of Ghana in 2024 general election. The former president made this known on his page on Facebook on 23rd December, 2019.
The Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination was established by the National Teaching Council in 2018 September for all teachers who had gone through training from the 46 accredited Public Colleges of Education, students who have undergone study on distance bases as well as University students who offered Education programmes during their course of study.
The GTLE examination came as a shock to the trained teachers in September 2018 who successfully had their scale from College at the time they were waiting patiently to be posted by Ghana Education Service.
Before the conduction of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination by the National Teaching Council, the trained teachers in 2018 demurred against the idea to sit for the examination with a cost of GH ˘ 220.00 before they will be given the chance to be posted by the Ghana Education Service.
They reached out and solicited National Teaching Council and the Ministry of Education and described it as an non-fair treatment, punishment wickedness etc which had been allocated to them.
Again, they indicated that, the University of Cape Coast Institute of Education has conducted numerous standardized examinations which gives the required qualification to be called renowned professional teachers to engage in tutoring conditioning in the Ghanaian classrooms. The teachers at that time gone through possible mediums not to take the examination but were later still forced by National Teaching Council, Ministry of Education and other managements of education to sit up for the examination.
After they agreed to write the examination, a section of teachers who sat for the examination didn't pass, resat and did not pass again due to the kind of frustrations they had been through.
Due to this and looking at the number of candidates who fail after sitting up for the examination, the former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has again made it clear to cancel the NTC Licensure Examination when he is given the mandate to be elected and assume the position as the president of Ghana in 2024.
This decision of the the former president seems to be the greatest good news for teachers and all those prospecting to be teachers across the country.
Over thousands of teachers in Ghana teacher training institutions are also excited and hailing the former president for his decision with regards to the cancellation of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE)
Currently, the National Teaching Council faces numerous disagreement by the public from in- service teachers as well as the leadership of some multitudinous unions of teachers over the decision to even pay a quantum of Gh˘ 220.00 by teacher trainees for the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE).
Over 21 percent of aspirants didn't make it for the pass mark of the Licensure Examination in 2020.
Over 83 percent of the aspirants also did not make it for the 2023 Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination.
What do you suppose about the decision of the former president John Dramani Mahama's decision with respects to the cancellation of the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE) organised by the National Teaching Council for teachers when assumed the position as the president in 2024, while the licensing of teachers has been explicitly elevated in the Act of Education 2008( Act 778)?
