PSV Eindhoven star Xavi Simons has been linked with a host of clubs this summer, including Manchester United, but his former team-mate Lionel Messi looks less than impressed.
Lionel Messi has warned Barcelona against re-signing former team-mate Xavi Simons - with Manchester United one of the clubs interested in the PSV Eindhoven player.
It is reported that the Dutch international will be offered to Arsenal this summer. Paris Saint-Germain have the option of re-signing Simons with a €6m clause effective only in July, but it is unclear if the player will be ready to return to the French capital.
Simons turned down the option of a contract extension at PSG - the team he joined from Barca - a year ago to move to Eindhoven, where he showed early signs of realizing his huge potential.
L'Equipe has pointed out that a return to PSG is not a ritual for a player, who scored 19 league goals and was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season. United, Arsenal and Tottenham are among a number of clubs in England that are monitoring the player's situation.
There is no shortage of admirers of Simons, with Barca among those who have considered the possibility of a transfer for the player. However, the Catalan side's precarious financial situation makes any comeback unlikely.
Messi played alongside Simons at Paris Saint-Germain for the 2021/22 campaign before the Dutchman left the club to join PSV Eindhoven last summer. The 20-year-old impressed in the 2022/23 campaign when he scored 19 goals and provided 9 assists for the Dutch club. Xavi Simons impressed in PSV vs Arsenal match in Europa League group stage

Simons would be a good signing for a Premier League club
The 20-year-old can play as a midfielder or a winger and has made five appearances for the Netherlands national team. He impressed PSV in their Europa League group stage matches against Arsenal last season, when the Dutch side won 2-0 over Eindhoven in October.
Catalan newspaper El Nacional reported that during a trip to Barcelona a year ago, Messi met Xavi to discuss a number of issues. One of the topics raised was Xavi Simons, a graduate of the Catalan club's La Masia youth system.
That was when the then-teenager was Messi's teammate at the Parc des Princes, where he left Barcelona in 2021. He is largely an unimportant player in the French capital, but has established himself at Under-21 level for the Netherlands.
The son of former Dutch footballer Regillio Simons then left PSG that summer when his contract expired and a return to the Camp Nou was suggested. However, he eventually joined PSV in the Eredivisie for a chance in the first team.
