Manchester United have approached West Ham for Declan Rice - but not what The Hammers had predicted.

Manchester United are currently out of the race to sign England midfielder Declan Rice.

Athletic report, Manchester City and Arsenal are all trying to land the West Ham starlet, who is valued at the club at around £100m.

The Mail reports that Manchester United have investigated Rice and are planning to make a swap offer. However, the players involved and the money did not seem to tempt West Ham enough for him to succeed.

A report from The Telegraph this week claims Manchester United are planning to offer Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay more money for Declan Rice.

However, The Mail reports that Manchester United want to offer Harry Maguire and Anthony Elanga more money.

The amount at stake is said to be just £40 million.

It's hard to believe this will please West Ham. While they want a young striker, Elanga lacks the goalscoring record they crave. MEN United newspaper valued Elanga at £10 million. With that in mind, United's offer is unlikely even to match West Ham's £100m valuation.

The biggest problem with this 'offer' is that Manchester United are not giving West Ham the player they want and need most; Scott McTominay, who will directly replace Declan Rice.

With McTominay as part of the offer, Manchester United's offer for West Ham would be attractive. Without it, he would definitely be flatly rejected. It was not an offer West Ham had in mind, and although it could have been a case of Manchester United playing low-ball early on before returning with a more valuable second offer.

But time may be slipping away from United already.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that Manchester City are close to reaching an agreement with West Ham.

United's low swap offer does not appear to have affected the situation. Instead, it simply points to a club struggling in the market, lacking the cash to make real big deals.
