During the dry season from November to April, dust storms are common, leading to high levels of particulate matter in the air.
Many households in the Upper West region rely on solid biomass fuels like wood and charcoal for cooking and heating. The inefficient use of these fuels for cooking indoors produces high levels of smoke that contain particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and other harmful pollutants. This type of household air pollution can cause respiratory diseases, heart disease, and cancer. Women and children are most affected as they spend more time near cooking areas.
Vehicular emissions, mainly from trucks and other diesel vehicles, are also a growing source of air pollution in the Upper West region. The rapid increase in road transportation in recent years, coupled with poor fuel quality and lack of vehicle emission controls, have led to higher levels of nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and particulate matter from vehicle emissions.
The high levels of air pollution present risks to public health and the environment in the Upper West region. Researchers have found increased rates of respiratory diseases like asthma and acute lower respiratory infections among children due to air pollution. The soil, water, vegetation, and wildlife in the region are also impacted by the high dust levels and other pollutants.
While some efforts are being made to tackle air pollution in Ghana, more action is needed, especially in rural regions. Investments in clean cooking solutions, clean transportation, air quality monitoring, and public awareness campaigns could help address the air pollution challenges in the Upper West region and improve the health and wellbeing of residents.

While air quality monitoring and management is improving in Ghana's major cities, rural regions like Upper West Region still lack comprehensive plans and resources to effectively tackle their air pollution problems. More initiatives are needed to raise awareness, provide clean cooking solutions and promote use of cleaner fuels and technologies to improve air quality and people's health in the region.
