Ghana is a West African nation that gained its independence from Britain in 1957. 1. Kwame Nkrumah (1909-1972)
Kwame Nkrumah was the first president of Ghana and the leader of the independence movement. He was a visionary and a pan-Africanist who advocated for the unity and liberation of Africa.
He also initiated several social and economic development projects in Ghana, such as the Akosombo Dam, the Tema Harbour, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. 2. Jerry Rawlings (1947-2020)
Jerry Rawlings was a former air force officer who led two military coups in 1979 and 1981. He pursued a market-oriented economic policy that attracted foreign investment and boosted growth. He also expanded access to education, health care, and social protection. He played an active role in regional and continental affairs, especially as the chairman of the African Union in 2007-2008.
4. John Atta Mills (1944-2012)
John Atta Mills was the third president of the Fourth Republic and the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He served from 2009 until his death in 2012. He was a former law professor and vice president under Rawlings. He was known for his humility and integrity.
He continued some of the economic policies of his predecessor, but also focused on improving infrastructure, agriculture, and energy supply. He also championed peace and stability in Ghana and beyond. He died unexpectedly at a military hospital in Accra after suffering from an undisclosed illness.
5. John Mahama (1958-)
John Mahama was the fourth president of the Fourth Republic and the leader of the NDC. He served from 2012 to 2017. He was a former journalist, historian, and vice president under Mills. He assumed office after the death of Mills and won a full term in 2012. He was known for his charisma and communication skills.
He implemented some ambitious projects such as the Ghana Gas Project, the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, and the Komenda Sugar Factory. He also faced some challenges such as power outages, inflation, and corruption scandals. He lost his bid for re-election in 2016 to his main rival, Nana Akufo-Addo.
6. Nana Akufo-Addo (1944-)
Nana Akufo-Addo is the current president of Ghana and the leader of the NPP. He has been serving since 2017. He is a former lawyer, human rights activist, and foreign minister under Kufuor. He won the 2016 election after three attempts, defeating Mahama by a wide margin.
He is known for his vision and determination to transform Ghana into a prosperous and modern nation. He has launched some flagship programs such as Free Senior High School, One District One Factory, Planting for Food and Jobs, and Ghana Beyond Aid. He has also faced some criticism over issues such as security, debt, unemployment, and COVID-19 response.
