Dortmund rekindle interest in Man United's Swedish star
Borussia Dortmund has reignited their interest in signing Manchester United winger Anthony Elanga. The German club had previously shown interest in acquiring the Sweden international during the January transfer window, alongside Everton. However, Dortmund's potential pursuit of Elanga has been given a boost by the substantial funds they received from the £113 million transfer of Jude Bellingham to Real Madrid. Elanga, who struggled for playing time under manager Erik ten Hag in his first season at Old Trafford, could be available for transfer, with Manchester United reportedly open to offers for the 21-year-old. In fact, there are suggestions that the club has even reduced its valuation of Elanga to a mere £10 million.
During the 2022-23 season, Elanga only managed to make seven starts for Manchester United and failed to find the back of the net, leading to a frustrating campaign for the Swedish winger. Earlier this month, there were reports linking Elanga with Bundesliga club RB Leipzig, following a recommendation from his Swedish teammate Emil Forsberg, who urged the club to sign him. Forsberg even expressed his intention to speak with the club's president in order to advocate for the deal.
Despite his limited playing time under Ten Hag at Manchester United, Elanga has remained a part of the Sweden national squad. He featured in both of Sweden's international fixtures this month, scoring as a substitute in their 4-1 friendly victory over New Zealand and making a late appearance in the 2-0 defeat to Austria in the Euro 2024 qualifiers.
Elanga's journey with Manchester United began when he joined the club at the age of 12. Since then, he has made 55 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring four goals. In a March interview with Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Elanga addressed his frustration with his limited playing time at Manchester United, acknowledging that it was ultimately the coach's decision. However, he remained committed to training hard and being prepared to seize any opportunities that come his way. Elanga expressed appreciation for the frequent conversations he has with the coaching staff, which not only revolve around playing time but also encompass other aspects of his development, highlighting the support he receives from the club.
As the transfer rumors continue to circulate, Elanga's future at Manchester United remains uncertain. With Dortmund reportedly reigniting their interest in the winger and the potential for a reduced asking price, it remains to be seen whether Elanga will continue his journey at Old Trafford or seek a new challenge elsewhere.
