Liverpool are reshaping their midfield at the moment but a player Jürgen Klopp has used there this summer should not be overlooked.
Average position doesn't lie. On several occasions when Liverpool broke in, Cody Gakpo played in midfield, with the Dutchman playing a completely different role than what Reds fans thought when he arrived.
Introduced as a winger who had often played on the left wing before, Gakpo essentially became Roberto Firmino's replacement. Of course, whoever is tasked with taking over from Firmino is likely to appear in some sort of retired position. But Gakpo sometimes seems to play legitimately at number eight, even though it goes largely unnoticed.
Liverpool.com's David Comerford explained that in this article last month, detailing how Gakpo fell to Aston Villa when Jürgen Klopp brought in Diogo Jota.
In theory, what looks like an attacking quartet is really just a change in midfield, although the Dutchman clearly tends to interpret his central position in an attacking way. .
For a team often accused of lacking goals from midfield, this is a pretty useful option to have. Gakpo has no shortage of attacking instincts, scoring nine goals and providing 12 assists in 14 Eredivisie games before moving to Liverpool. At his two clubs and in all competitions last season, he scored 20 goals and 20 assists.
However, that's only Klopp's temporary solution, right? Unnecessary. Gakpo really needs to be remembered as Liverpool plan to rebuild their midfield in the summer.
After all, Liverpool cannot give up on Darwin Núñez, last summer's potential record signing. It's okay, he'll take over berth number nine in the near future.
But Gakpo more or less made himself invincible by the end of the final campaign. With Klopp looking to curate a striker roster that includes Núñez, Jota, Mohamed Salah and Luis Díaz, a paper midfield quartet with an additional 'secret' midfielder is likely to be more common. Liverpool have played with four strikers in the past and it would be interesting to see something like that again.
That doesn't mean Liverpool necessarily need to add another midfielder. If so, Liverpool will probably have to add an element in attack.
But signing two more men who fit the ethos of an attacking 8 seems a bit overkill, with a 6 to challenge Fabinho potentially being the best investment based on what Gakpo can offer.
Gakpo has impressed since arriving in January for an initial $47m (£37m/€43m) from PSV, and with midfield rebuilding taking shape, he could be one the 'secret' option that Klopp uses much more often. think.
