If John Mahama is chosen as the leader of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), he has promised to name James Gyakye Quayson, a troubled former Assin North MP, as a minister.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer asserts that Mr. Quayson has demonstrated his capacity as a politician who prioritizes development.

The former President claimed that the former MP, despite serving in the opposition, had done enough for his constituents on his own dime.

This was made clear by Mr. Mahama on Sunday, June 25, when he spoke to Assin North voters ahead of the upcoming by-election for the district on Tuesday, June 27.

"He [Gyakye Quayson] respects everyone and is modest and God-fearing. Nothing will stop me from appointing him as a minister if God grants me the presidency.

Look at what he has accomplished in terms of development from his own funds, even as an opposition MP. Just consider what he would accomplish if he were to join the clergy, Mahama said.

President Akufo-Addo has meanwhile urged the residents of Assin North to vote against Mr. Quayson.

James Gyakye Quayson, according to the President, is unable to fulfill his obligations as a Member of Parliament (MP).

President Akufo-Addo claims that Mr. Quayson may go to prison as a result of the criminal case he is currently involved in, leaving the Constituency without a member of parliament.

He continued by saying that the election is important for the district and the country as a whole.

"We should not vote for or support people who are embroiled in legal disputes that could ultimately result in their imprisonment."

"We require a person who can assist you in coming. a person who will act in your best interests. Gyakye Quayson reportedly said, "Even in prison, you people will vote for me." Can he do his job from prison?

"How can he work from prison when we vote for people to go to Parliament and do their jobs? Vote for someone who can work to improve your lives rather than someone who will end up in jail, President Akufo-Addo advised.

We must responsibly exercise our right to vote, I repeat. We shouldn't support or vote for people who are embroiled in legal disputes that could ultimately result in their imprisonment.

President Akufo-Addo said at the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) final rally before the by-elections, "We vote for people to go to Parliament to work, how can he work from prison so don't vote for someone who will end up in jail, vote for someone who can work to improve your lives."

Assin North now needs a by-election after the Electoral Commission received a letter from parliament declaring the seat vacant.

This came after the Supreme Court ruled that the Electoral Commission had broken the law by allowing Mr. Quayson to run in the 2020 parliamentary election without providing proof that he had renounced his citizenship in Canada.

In its decision, the supreme court mandated that James Gyakye Quayson's name be removed from the records of the House of Representatives.

It also stated that his election was invalid, void, and without consequence.

It was also ruled that his oath of office was unconstitutional.
