Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pushed back against claims that his party regrets not making Charles Opoku, the candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), their candidate in the Assin North by-elections.

Speaking to journalists at a polling station during the ongoing by-election, Gyamfi refuted claims that his party ever considered Opoku for the candidacy.

Gyamfi went on to describe Opoku as a "political prostitute" who approached the NDC with a proposal to become their candidate, but was rejected due to his lack of values and trustworthiness.

According to Gyamfi, Opoku only joined the NPP after his proposal to the NDC was rejected. He claimed to have WhatsApp chats with NDC executives to back up his claims.

Gyamfi also defended the NDC's decision to make James Gyakye Quayson their candidate for the Assin North by-election, stating that Quayson was the best candidate to represent the people of Assin North.

He expressed no regrets about the NDC's decision, despite Quayson being ousted from parliament due to a legal challenge over his dual citizenship status.

Overall, Gyamfi's comments reflect the highly charged political environment in Ghana ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The Assin North by-election, which was triggered by Quayson's ouster, is being closely watched as a potential bellwether for the country's political future.

With both the NDC and the NPP vying for control, tensions are running high and political rhetoric is becoming increasingly heated.

Despite the intensity of the political climate, it is important for all parties to maintain a respectful and civil discourse. By engaging in name-calling and personal attacks, politicians risk alienating voters and damaging the democratic process.

As Ghanaians prepare to head to the polls in 2024, it is crucial that political leaders set a positive example and work to build a more inclusive and peaceful political culture for the country.
