Former Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong, has expressed her shock at the comments made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo regarding the ongoing Assin North by-election.
Speaking to GhanaWeb, Brew Appiah-Oppong stated that Akufo-Addo’s comments were unfortunate and prejudicial, particularly since the case is still in court. The president had stated that there would be no use in voting for an MP who would be going to jail, in response to claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress that their candidate would still be voted for even if he is jailed.
Brew Appiah-Oppong questioned how Akufo-Addo could have known that the candidate in question, Gyakye Quayson, would be going to jail, and expressed surprise that a seasoned lawyer like Akufo-Addo would make such a statement. She further stated that the comments were worrying and unacceptable.
The Assin North by-election has been a contentious issue, with the removal of Quayson from his position as MP due to dual citizenship. The NDC has nominated him as their candidate for the by-election, while the NPP has nominated Charles Owusu.
Brew Appiah-Oppong’s comments reflect the concerns of many Ghanaians regarding the politicization of the legal system and the need for a fair and impartial judiciary. It is important that politicians refrain from making prejudicial statements about ongoing legal cases, as this can undermine the credibility of the legal system and compromise the rule of law.
As the by-election approaches, it is crucial that all parties involved act with utmost integrity and respect for the law. The people of Assin North deserve a fair and transparent electoral process, and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that this is the case.
