In the ongoing Assin North by-elections, some voters at the Methodist Primary 1 polling station in Assin Breku have made allegations of vote buying against the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The allegations were made just 30 minutes before the commencement of voting, with voters at the DA JSS Bereku raising alarm about vote buying in a house close to the polling center.

When GhanaWeb's reporter arrived at the scene, there were some voters present at the house in question, and journalists were being chased away from the venue. The northern regional chairman of the NPP also blocked cameras and ordered party members not to speak with journalists, adding to the tension at the scene.

These allegations of vote buying are concerning, as they undermine the integrity of the electoral process and compromise the democratic rights of voters. It is important that all stakeholders involved in the Assin North by-elections act with utmost integrity and transparency, and that any reports of electoral malpractice are thoroughly investigated.

Despite the allegations, voting commenced at exactly 7am at the Methodist Park, which has four polling stations. The Assin North by-elections have been highly contentious, with the removal of the incumbent MP due to dual citizenship. The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has nominated the removed MP as their candidate for the by-election, while the NPP has nominated Charles Owusu.

As the by-elections continue, it is crucial that all parties involved respect the electoral process and uphold the principles of democracy. The people of Assin North deserve a fair and transparent electoral process, and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that this is the case.

Any reports of electoral malpractice must be thoroughly investigated and addressed, in order to ensure the credibility and legitimacy of the electoral outcome.
