Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, the minister of education, opened a training resort and conference facility in Agona Nyakrom on Friday for the University of Cape Coast's College of Distance Education (CoDE).
The complex comprises 10 conference rooms, 16 executive bedrooms, 16 regular bedrooms, shops, indoor amusement areas, a restaurant, and a multipurpose recreation court, as well as ancillary services.
The centre is the initial step in introducing the university's inclusive education and volunteerism to the Agona Nyakrom traditional area's residents.
The Omanhene and the residents of Nyakrom generously donated a 50-acre block of land to the university in 2007, which led to the start of the training and resort facility project in Agona Nyakrom in 2012.
The building will eventually serve as a satellite campus for the university, hosting a variety of programmes, particularly those in health and related fields.
The initiative, according to UCC Vice-Chancellor Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, is proof of the school's ongoing commitment to community participation, innovative research, and academic success.
According to him, the UCC should be repositioned as the world's centre for innovative thinking, delivering curricula that are driven by demand and practical entrepreneurial courses, and actively translating the findings of its ground-breaking research for sustainable development.
Prof. Boampong pointed out that the center's goal of carving out a niche by offering high-quality, egalitarian, and inclusive education could be summed up by connecting his vision with the UCC's purpose.
It gave graduates the skills they needed to become responsible citizens, independent learners, and public servants with a zeal for job development.
He continued by saying that the training and resort facility also represented the university's dedication to all-encompassing education, business, relevance, and sustainable growth.
He assured the Nananom and the residents of Agona Nyakrom that their sacrifice would not go in vain and promised that the community would soon feel the effects of the facility's use.
Dr. Adutwum, for his part, asked the university and the board to work with the people of Nyakrom to enhance education generally in the region.
strong public education system
In addition, the ministry would ensure that parents who sent their children to private schools did so out of choice rather than because they had no other option. The minister stated that the ministry's focus was to create a more robust public education regime from elementary school through senior high and to universities.
an enabling environment
The CoDE Training Resort and Conference was created as a result of the college's strategic intent and commitment to offering a supportive learning environment that would give people the tools and skills they need to succeed in today's rapidly evolving world, according to the college's provost, Professor Mohammed Anokye Adams.
The Omanhene of Nyakrom, Okofo Okatakyi Nyarku Eku X, urged the university to run some educational programmes like nursing, midwifery, and mental health there instead of just using it as a research and retreat centre so that students in the neighbourhood could take advantage of those programmes.
